Highlight: Closing out the year
At the end of the first semester, the divisions kept the meaning of Christmas alive as they celebrated their liturgies for the Christmas season. With all the decorations, gifts, ribbons, and trappings, it is important that we, as a school, as a community, and as a country remember the true meaning of Christmas--the Birth of Baby Jesus. Let us keep Christmas beautiful without a thought of greed, that it may remain a miracle that brings us closer and strengthens our relationship with God the Almighty Father.
Highlight: Social Justice Forum
The Junior College hosted its annual Social Justice Forum on Tuesday 25th of September in the Fordyce Chapel with a mass gathering of students ready to listen to an intense debate. The first team comprised of Senator Karen Bodden and Pastor Louis Wade who were in the opposition that decriminalization not be passed for marijuana. Team two included Mr. John Newport and Mr. Clinton "Pulu" Lightburn, who supported the movement.
Both teams, whether users or not, brought their arguments forward in a diplomatic and respectful way where professionalism and peace was maintained. Mr. John Woods was also present as a guest and addressed the student population on his views towards the act and encouraged that there be some promotion of peace as there is the need for a decrease in violence and an increase in our faith. His words uttered that God is the only one who can steer our nation through the right path. After the debate, students had the opportunity to speak with the presenters and ask questions to both teams.
Highlight: Signa L. Yorke Memorial Lecture
In sync with Ms. Signa Yorke who herself had remained a devotee to education, the public lecture that has been named in her honor has likewise endured for more than two decades. For its 22nd year, the Signa L. Yorke Memorial Lecture brought many Junior College students together from all areas of concentration for a presentation entitled "The Relevance of The Mayan Calender in 2012."
The Mayas are known for their rich history and of course the traditions and rituals that have remained alive in our multicultural nation. The presentation was delivered by Mr. Cesar Ross from the University of Belize. Mr. Ross briefed on the 2012 phenomenon that has brought to the forefront a range of beliefs that various drastic change events will occur on 21st December of this year. Undoubtedly, students rose to the occasion as Belize, through the collaboration of the Institute of Social and Cultural Research, had recently launched a series of activities and events for this year's Celebration of the Mayan Calendar. Special thanks goes out to members of the Language Arts Department and its Chair, Ms. Florita Smith.

SJC Raffle 2013
On Feb. 8, 2013 hundreds of high school and junior college students came out to watch the annual raffle drawing. With thousands of tickets in the barrel, the chances of winning one of the extravagant prizes were slim. But that didn't stop the onlookers from crossing their fingers and holding their breath.
Everyone was also treated to some live music, provided by a mysteriously unnamed band of junior college students. Playing a mixture of alternative and pop rock, the band put on quite a show. Keep an eye out for them at future events.
$120k Equipment Donation from India
St. John's College, its divisions, the Alumni Association, administrators, faculty, staff and students extend great gratitude to the Government of India who donated IT equipment for the enhancement of the College's computer labs.
A handing over ceremony took place on Valentine's Day where the High Commissioner of India to Belize, His Excellency Sunjay Chinoy, made the official presentation. Members present included the Chairlady of the SJC Board of Trustees, Mrs. Lisa Ritz Chang, the Minister of Science and Technology, Mrs. Joy Grant, and Alumnus, Mr. Arun Hotchandani.
Thanks to all faculty members and students for attending the event. We look forward to continued relations with the Government of India.
Snyders Field Inauguration
Today, St. John’s College officially inaugurated a newly rebuilt football field on its campus. The field had not been used for many years and required an extensive renovation process. But with major fundraising and lots of hard work, we dedicate the field one of the longest serving Jesuit priests by naming it Snyders Field.
Fr. Bill Snyders has long been a proponent of educational quality at SJC. He hopes the field will serve to build camaraderie, sportsmanship, and healthy physical activity.
