St. Johns College 2nd Annual Table Tennis Club Tournament

 

The 2nd Annual SJC Table Tennis Club Tournament took place this past Saturday, January 27, 2013 at the Belize Elementary School auditorium, "the home of table tennis!"



Games kicked off at approximately 1:30 p.m. with some 42 students participating in three categories:  Advanced, Intermediate, and Beginner.



In the Advanced category, 12 of the top players from SJC competed in round robin competition with the top 8 finishers advancing to a double elimination championship.



Top seed, Harim Ochaeta, advanced to the finals by defeating Leo Carballo, Gian Lisbey and Fabio Carballo.  Carballo also advance to

the finals by defeating Daniel Sanchez and Mishek Musa. In the final match, Ochaeta emerged as the champion by defeating Carballo with a score of 3-1. The final results were:


ADVANCED CATEGORY
1st - Harim Ochaeta
2nd - Fabio Carballo
3rd - Mishek Musa
4th - Daniel Sanchez


In the intermediate category, 12 players also competed in a round robin competition with the top 8 finishers advancing to a final double elimination championship.


Daniel Echeverria advanced to the finals by defeating Michael Teng, Gavin Wong and Zacharey Garbutt. Garbutt also made it to the finals by defeating Johann Ketz, Isaac Hines & Ashley Weller. Echeverria took the Championship by defeating Garbutt, 3-0.

INTERMEDIATE CATEGORY
1st - Daniel Echeverria
2nd - Zachary Garbutt
3rd - Ashley Weller
4th - Issac Hines

 

In the Beginners category, 18 students began the round robin competition with the top 8 advancing to the double elimination finals.


Ryan Vellos made it to the finals by defeating Alexya Perez, Samuel Ferguson and Denzel Young, while Young advanced by defeating Cohen Wong, Brandon Usher and Henry Miguel. In the finals, Vellos took the championship by defeating Young with a score of 3-2.

Mr. Yasser Musa, head of the SJC Table Tennis Club, and Mrs. Yolanda Gongora, headmaster of SJC High School, were on hand to deliver the medals to all the winners. Musa expressed his sincere appreciation to all the participants and to the support of the Belize Table Tennis Association in assisting with organizing of the event. He thanked all the students for their competitive spirit and for making the event a success. President of the BTTA, Tux Vasquez, was also present to deliver the message to students that it is the priority of the BTTA to develop the sport of table tennis in the schools and students. The 2013 calendar of events now includes an exclusive event for the 18 and younger category of students. 
Medals were awarded to the top four finishers in each category.

CONGRATULATIONS to all the winners, and THANK YOU to all the organizers, participants, spectators, parents and students who took part in this event. It is encouraging to see the young table tennis players participating and competing and having fun.

Football Team wins Division Championship

The Central Secondary Schools Sports Association (CSSSA) high school football finals climaxed tonight at the MCC Grounds, where both female and male games #2 of the Finals 2-game series ended deadlocked in regulation. The females settled matters in overtime, but the males had to go all the way to penalties.

 

Games #1 of the Finals for both females and males were played on Friday, February 8, and both were draw games. In the females, Wesley and SCA played to a 0-0 draw. And in the males, ACC took a 1-nil first half lead on a goal by Richard Waight; but Dmitri converted a penalty in second half to level things 1-1 for SJC.

The decisive second games of the Finals took place this evening at the MCC Grounds, after which medals were awarded to the 1st and 2nd place finishers.  The male Finals game 2 between SJC and ACC, and they were scoreless in regulation and also in the 10-10 overtime. ACC had dominated play in both regulation and overtime, but they were unable to shake the SJC net; and in the penalty shootout, SJC prevailed, 3-2, for the championship, with conversions by Dmitri Fabro, Sydney Bradley and Jorge Perez.


CSSSA champions, Wesley females and SJC males will represent the Central Zone in the National high school football championship this Friday and Saturday in Orange Walk.

Ash Wednesday Mass

The High School community gathered together on Wednesday to participate in the Ash Wednesday Mass.  Fr. Tony Vega, the Jesuit Superior, was on hand to perform the mass.

Science, Reading & Art Fair
Feb. 21, 2013

Today St. John’s College hosted thousands of primary and secondary students at a grand Science, Reading and Art Fair on Landivar Campus from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students from all four forms prepared for months on group science projects, drawing and painting projects, and poetry and drama performances.

It was a collaborative effort bringing students, teachers, administrators and staff together showcasing the SJC spirit. By numerous accounts the fair delivered an outstanding display of creativity, brilliance and innovation.

Catholic Secondary Schools Week Kicks Off
March 3, 2013

This year’s Catholic Secondary Schools Week is being observed from Sunday, March 3-8 under the theme "Catholic Schools Raise the Standards." The week was opened with a mass on Sunday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m. at the Holy Redeemer Cathedral. The celebrant was Fr. Jordan Gongora.

In attendance were students, teachers and administrators from the three Catholic secondary schools in Belize City: St. John’s College, Palloti High School and St. Catherine Academy.

The annual school marathon was held on Wednesday.

Sports Day 2013
March 22, 2013

The annual SJC sports day kicked off with brief opening ceremonies and a prayer outside the Gym on Friday March 22. The first event was the sports day marathon a two-lap run around the SJC internal ring road. Rondre Lewis of 4B sprinted to the finish beating out Albert Davis of 3A. Inside the GYM a variety of scheduled games were held including a Basketball, Volleyball and Table Tennis Tournament.

The fun events of slow bicycle race, sac race, peg board and tug and war garnered great excitement. To cap the day medals were distributed by our Principal and Sports Coordinator.
